Pahalgam Terror Attack: EU Urges India and Pakistan to Avoid Conflict and Start Dialogue
Pahalgam Terror Attack: After the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 people, including many tourists, tensions between India and Pakistan have grown rapidly. The European Union (EU) has asked both countries to remain calm and avoid further conflict.
EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas spoke separately to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy PM Ishaq Dar. She said the rising tensions are worrying and urged both sides to choose peace and talk to each other.

Jaishankar Thanks EU for Supporting India on Terrorism
In a social media post, Dr. Jaishankar appreciated the EU’s strong stand against terrorism. He mentioned his call with Kaja Kallas and welcomed the EU's support.
United States Also Steps In
Two days before the EU’s statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also spoken to leaders of both India and Pakistan. He asked both nations to calm down and resolve issues peacefully.
India Plans Strong Action Against Terror
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level security meeting after the attack. He gave the Indian military full freedom to decide how and when to respond. The government has promised a tough punishment for those responsible, especially due to suspected cross-border involvement.
India Takes Tough Steps Against Pakistan
On April 23, India took strong steps by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the land border at Attari, and reducing diplomatic ties with Pakistan.
Pakistan Responds
In return, Pakistan blocked its airspace for Indian flights and stopped all trade, even through third countries. Pakistan also said stopping water under the Indus Treaty would be seen as an "act of war".
Global Support for India
On May 2, Dr. Jaishankar also spoke with Swiss leader Ignazio Cassis. Both leaders agreed on a zero-tolerance policy for terrorism and supported strong global action against it.
