PCMC Faces Challenges in Achieving Rs.1,000 Crore Property Tax Target

PCMC is facing difficulties in meeting its ₹1,000 crore property tax collection target due to government policies, elections, and tax waivers. So far, only ₹775 crore has been collected, leading to intensified recovery efforts, including sealing defaulters' properties.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had set a target of Rs.1,000 crore in property tax collection for this year. However, as of February 25, the civic body has managed to collect only Rs.775 crore. Several factors, including government schemes, election-related restrictions, and survey delays, have impacted tax recovery efforts.

Impact of Waivers on Tax Collection

PCMC used to generate additional income through penalties and utility fees. However, in February, the Maharashtra government waived these charges, resulting in a loss of Rs.150-Rs.200 crore annually. Additionally, the garbage collection utility fee, which generated Rs.44 crore last year, has also been removed.

Unauthorised Constructions Affecting Revenue

Following strict action against illegal constructions in Kudalwadi, many unauthorized property owners have started avoiding tax payments. This has further affected the overall collection figures.

PCMC officials are intensifying their efforts to close the gap before the financial year ends. “We are taking strict action to ensure the Rs.1,000 crore target is met,” said Additional Commissioner Pradeep Jambhale-Patil.
