From Browsing To Thinking
According to co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas, Comet is designed as a “thinking partner” rather than a passive browsing tool. Unlike traditional browsers, it integrates an always-on AI sidebar, which the company describes as “agentic”.
Key Features Of Comet
The browser can perform multi-step workflows across tabs—comparing prices, drafting emails, booking meetings, and even completing transactions when authorised. It also helps cut down tab clutter by carrying forward task-based contexts instead of isolating individual web pages.
Privacy And Security
Perplexity says Comet AI stores browsing history and interactions locally, with end-to-end encryption enabled by default. The browser also integrates with password managers and offers enterprise-level controls, compliance features, and admin tools for corporate clients.
India Expansion Plans
To accelerate adoption, Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel, offering millions of Airtel customers a one-year complimentary Perplexity Pro subscription. The company has also announced plans to hire in India, signalling a long-term commitment to its fastest-growing digital market.
Competition And Challenges
India’s digitally savvy audience presents a big opportunity, but challenges remain. Regulators and publishers may raise concerns about a browser that scrapes, summarises, and acts across the web. Meanwhile, Google and Microsoft could respond by embedding similar agentic AI features into their own browsers, intensifying competition.
