PM Modi Announces 1 lakh New Medical Seats: On November 13, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Indian government has already added 1 lakh medical seats across the country and plans to add around 75,000 more. The announcement was made at an event in Darbhanga, Bihar, where the Prime Minister inaugurated the foundation for a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and unveiled infrastructure projects valued at Rs. 12,100 crore.

Government’s Focus on Healthcare

Speaking at the event, Modi shared his government's vision for improving healthcare in India. He outlined a "holistic approach" that focuses on several key areas:

  1. Disease Prevention: The government’s priority is preventing diseases before they occur.
  2. Accurate Diagnosis: ensuring that diseases are diagnosed correctly and on time.
  3. Affordable and Free Treatment: Providing treatment that is both affordable and accessible to all, especially the underprivileged.
  4. Healthcare in Smaller Towns: Expanding quality healthcare services in smaller towns and rural areas.
  5. Use of Technology: Increasing the use of technology in healthcare services to improve efficiency and reach.

AIIMS in Darbhanga: A Game-Changer for Bihar

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the new AIIMS in Darbhanga, which will be a major boost to healthcare in Bihar. The hospital is expected to benefit not only people from Bihar but also from nearby regions such as West Bengal and Nepal. The construction of this AIIMS will also create new employment opportunities in the region. Modi emphasized that the AIIMS project in Darbhanga marks a “significant transformation” in the healthcare sector of Bihar.

Ayushman Bharat and Other Health Initiatives: Modi also spoke about the government's efforts to provide affordable healthcare through initiatives like Ayushman Bharat. He noted that over 1.5 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (health centers) have been established across the country to aid in the early detection of diseases like cancer and diabetes. The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has already helped over 4 crore poor patients receive medical treatment. According to Modi, many of these patients would not have been able to afford hospital treatment without this scheme.

He also mentioned that the government has been expanding the reach of healthcare institutions by establishing new AIIMS in different parts of India. Today, there are nearly two dozen AIIMS across the country. Additionally, the number of medical colleges has doubled in the last decade.

Education in Indian Languages

In another major announcement, Modi said that the government is now offering medical education in Hindi and other Indian languages. This move, he said, will help make medical education more accessible to students, especially those from poorer, marginalized, and rural backgrounds. The aim is to ensure that children from all communities can pursue careers in medicine and become doctors.
