PM Modi News: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Chandigarh has become the first city in India to fully implement three major new criminal laws. These laws are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, marking a significant shift in India’s criminal justice system. The new laws replace colonial-era legislation, such as the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.

Key Details of the New Laws

The new laws came into effect on July 1, 2024, and aim to make the legal system more efficient and modern. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that these laws were essential for ensuring justice and protecting citizens' rights, with a specific focus on ending the colonial-era legal framework.

PM Modi's Statement

PM Modi emphasized that these new laws reflect India’s commitment to fulfilling the constitutional ideals that ensure justice for all citizens. He pointed out that terrorists and terror organizations will no longer be able to exploit legal complexities to their advantage. These reforms are seen as an important step toward modernizing the justice system and making it more responsive to contemporary challenges.

End of Colonial-Era Laws

PM Modi also made an important historical reference, stating that the new laws marked the end of British-era laws, which were used to oppress and exploit Indians during British rule. He mentioned that laws like the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Indian Evidence Act, and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) were created after the British saw the 1857 revolution as a threat to their rule. These laws were designed to punish Indians and keep them subjugated.

Home Minister Amit Shah's Remarks

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the reforms and added that, with the new laws in place, justice will be delivered much more swiftly. He assured that within three years of registering an FIR (First Information Report), people will receive justice. He also mentioned that India’s criminal justice system will soon rank among the most advanced in the world.

Live Crime Scene Demo

During his visit to Chandigarh, PM Modi witnessed a live demonstration of a crime scene investigation by the Chandigarh Police. The demonstration, held at Punjab Engineering College, showcased how evidence is now being collected under the new laws. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur briefed the Prime Minister on the process, highlighting the improvements brought about by the new system.

Support from Local Leaders

The event was attended by several key leaders, including Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, UT Chandigarh Adviser Rajeev Verma, and Chandigarh Director General of Police Surendra Singh Yadav. They also lauded the Chandigarh administration for successfully implementing the new laws.
