Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended warm respects to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on the occasion of his birth anniversary. In a post shared on X, PM Modi wrote, “Tributes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. We recall his contributions to our nation during his long years in public life.”

Dr. Manmohan Singh Birth and Early Journey
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh grew up to become one of the most respected economists in the world. His academic brilliance took him to Cambridge University and later to Oxford, where he earned his doctorate in economics.
Architect of Economic Reforms
Before becoming Prime Minister, Dr. Singh served as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 in the P. V. Narasimha Rao government. He is best remembered for ushering in the era of liberalization, privatization, and globalization, reforms that helped India recover from a deep financial crisis and paved the way for rapid economic growth.
Distinguished Career of Dr. Manmohan Singh
Beyond politics, Dr. Singh held several prestigious positions, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, and Finance Secretary. Known for his humility, integrity, and intellect, he was often referred to as a “reluctant politician” who preferred quiet work over the spotlight.
Legacy as Prime Minister
Serving as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh became the first Sikh to hold the country’s top executive post. His tenure witnessed record GDP growth, the launch of MGNREGA, education and health initiatives, and the landmark Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987.
