Pune: PM Modi's planned visit to Pune on Thursday was cancelled due to heavy rainfall in the city, as reported by ANI. The Prime Minister was scheduled to launch several key projects worth Rs. 22,600 crores, including the inauguration of the Pune Metro section from District Court to Swargate. This would have marked the completion of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The underground section, covering District Court to Swargate, was built at a cost of Rs.1,810 crore.

School and College Closures in Pune

As a result of the heavy rain forecast, the Pune district administration ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Pune city and the Pimpri-Chinchwad area for Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Pune, warning of heavy rains, lightning, and thunderstorms in the region.

Widespread Weather Alerts

Apart from Pune, the IMD also issued an orange alert for Thane, Raigad, and Mumbai on September 26. Additionally, Nashik and Dhule districts in north Maharashtra were also placed under an orange alert due to expected heavy rainfall.

Water-logging and Flood Warnings

Pune had already experienced significant rainfall on Wednesday evening, which caused water-logging in several parts of the city. The water resources department also issued an alert, warning that due to the forecast of heavy rains from September 24 to September 29, additional water may need to be released from dams on the Mutha and Pawana rivers. Residents have been urged to stay alert for potential flooding.

Rain Disrupts Daily Life and Major Events

The heavy rains in Pune have caused disruptions across the city, including the cancellation of the Prime Minister's visit and the closure of educational institutions.

With the ongoing orange alert and potential water discharge from nearby dams, the city is bracing for further rainfall and possible flooding in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow weather updates closely.
