What is Pohela Boishakh?

Pohela Boishakh (also called Naba Barsha) is the first day of the Bengali calendar. The word ‘Pohela’ means ‘first’ and ‘Boishakh’ is the first month. People welcome the new year with hope, prayers, and celebrations.

Where is it Celebrated?

This colorful festival is mainly celebrated in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Bangladesh. In Assam, it coincides with Bihu, which is also a New Year festival.

History of the Bengali Calendar

The Bengali calendar was introduced during the rule of King Shoshangko in ancient Bengal. The Bengali era began in 594 CE.

  • Before Pohela Boishakh: Bengali Year = Gregorian Year – 594

  • After Pohela Boishakh: Bengali Year = Gregorian Year – 593
    So, after April 15, 2025, it will be the Bengali year 1432.
