Indian men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has been selected as one of the flagbearers for India at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024, alongside shooter Manu Bhaker. The ceremony will take place on Friday, August 9.
Sreejesh’s Final Tournament and Key Contributions
Sreejesh, who is playing his final tournament at the Paris Olympics, was pivotal in India’s journey to their second consecutive bronze medal in hockey. This achievement marks the first time India has won back-to-back Olympic hockey medals since 1972. Sreejesh’s exceptional performance included critical saves in the group match against Australia and a decisive penalty shootout against Great Britain in the quarterfinals. His remarkable stops were crucial in the bronze medal match, showcasing his skill and determination.
Retirement and Legacy
At 36 years old, Sreejesh is set to retire after the Olympics. He expressed his desire to end his career on a high note, rather than leaving room for doubt about prolonging his career. “I know that after today's match, nobody wanted me to retire. But my intention was to leave at the peak of my career, so people would not question my decision."
