Priyanka Gandhi Sworn in as Member of Parliament, Follows Brother Rahul’s Tradition
On Thursday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took a significant step in her political journey by being sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha. This moment marked her debut in the Parliament, and she took the oath while holding a copy of the Indian Constitution. This gesture is symbolic and aligns with her brother, Rahul Gandhi’s practice. Rahul Gandhi, an MP from Wayanad, is often seen carrying a red-colored copy of the Constitution at his rallies, a part of his movement to "protect the Constitution" from the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Priyanka Gandhi’s Electoral Victory
Priyanka Gandhi’s journey into Parliament began with her victory in the Wayanad bypoll. She won the seat with an impressive margin of 4,10,931 votes in the bypoll held recently. The bypoll took place alongside the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections of 2024Priyanka's win came in a three-way contest between herself, BJP's Navya Haridas, and Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Although Wayanad has historically been a Congress stronghold, the election was fiercely contested, with Priyanka Gandhi ultimately securing the victory.

Rahul Gandhi’s Resignation and the Wayanad Bypoll
The Wayanad seat was previously held by Priyanka Gandhi’s brother, Rahul Gandhi. He had won the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but had also secured another important seat, Rae Bareli. As per his decision, Rahul Gandhi resigned from the Wayanad seat to retain Rae Bareli, which led to the necessity of the Wayanad bypoll. This cleared the way for Priyanka to contest and win the seat.
Rahul Gandhi’s Oath Ceremony Earlier This Year
In June 2024, Rahul Gandhi was sworn in as an MP. During his oath-taking ceremony, Rahul ended his pledge with the words "Jai Hind Jai Samvidan," affirming his commitment to the Indian Constitution. This phrase is often used to express a deep respect for the Constitution and the democratic principles of India. His oath was a solemn promise to uphold the Constitution and work for the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
