Samsung Workers' Strike in Chennai: The labor dispute at Samsung Electronics' manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, has entered its 16th day. Over 1,000 workers have been on strike, demanding the implementation of 20 key issues. In response, the company has issued warnings, invoked a 'no work, no pay' policy, and threatened layoffs if the strike continues.

Details of the Strike

The strike began on September 9, 2024, with strong backing from the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The workers are demanding a wage hike, recognition of their union, and an eight-hour workday. Recently, some employees returned to work after receiving warning notices from the company.

Company's Response

Samsung's notice labeled the strike as "illegal" and stated that workers would not be paid for the duration of the strike. A representative from the company emphasized that management is willing to resolve issues through discussion and urged workers to return to their duties.

The notice warned employees of possible dismissal if they did not report back to work within four days. Workers were instructed to provide reasons for their absence within seven days to avoid dismissal.

Impact on Production

The ongoing strike has affected the production of various consumer electronics, including televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines. An unnamed company official highlighted that the welfare of workers remains a priority, and Samsung is committed to addressing any grievances. The official also reassured consumers that efforts are being made to prevent disruptions, especially ahead of the festive season.

Allegations of Legal Action

In a recent development, Muthukumar, the Tamil Nadu Secretary for CITU, alleged that Samsung management has taken legal action requiring protesting workers to remain 500 meters away from the factory. However, he pointed out that the workers were already situated two kilometers away.
