Satya Nadella Doubles Down on AI as Judson Althoff Takes Over Microsoft’s Growth Engine
In a major organizational change, Microsoft has promoted longtime sales executive Judson Althoff to CEO of its commercial business. Althoff will now oversee a unified division that brings together sales, marketing, and operations across all commercial products — including the company’s rapidly growing AI Copilot suite. This marks one of Microsoft’s biggest leadership shifts in years, with Chief Marketing Officer Takeshi Numoto and his team now reporting directly to Althoff. He’ll also lead teams previously under Chief Operations Officer Carolina Dybeck Happe.

The reorganization allows Satya Nadella to devote more time to technical leadership, especially around AI research, datacenter architecture, and product innovation. Nadella described this shift as part of a “tectonic AI platform transition,” emphasizing the need to balance current business operations with future innovation.
“We are in the midst of a tectonic AI platform shift,” Nadella wrote in his email to employees, highlighting Microsoft’s mission to lead the next generation of AI-driven technologies.
Judson Althoff ’s Proven Track Record
Althoff, who joined Microsoft in 2013, previously led the company’s global sales organization and built Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions, now a core revenue driver. After a short sabbatical, he returns to take on this expanded leadership role, tasked with aligning product strategy and execution across departments.
Microsoft Unifies Teams to Tackle AI Competition
The restructuring comes as Microsoft strengthens its position against Google and OpenAI — its own strategic partner. Recently, the company merged its separate AI marketplaces into a single Microsoft Marketplace, integrating Azure developer tools with AI automation agents. With Althoff at the helm, Microsoft’s new commercial leadership team — spanning engineering, marketing, sales, operations, and finance — will work with shared accountability to drive the next wave of AI-powered business growth.
