His mortal remains will be brought to his residence in R.K. Puram, New Delhi. The cremation will take place at Lodhi crematorium on Wednesday. The hospital noted that Malik had been suffering from diabetic kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Critical Health Complications

Malik was admitted to RML Hospital on May 11 due to a complicated urinary tract infection. His condition worsened with hospital-acquired pneumonia, septic shock, and multi-organ failure. Despite aggressive treatment, including ventilatory support and dialysis, doctors could not save him.

Political Career Highlights

Hailing from Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh, Malik began his political journey in the 1970s as an MLA with Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal. He later joined Lok Dal and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1980. He moved to the Congress in 1984 and returned to the Rajya Sabha in 1986.

Malik served as the Governor of Bihar, Odisha, Goa, and Meghalaya. His most significant assignment came as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during the historic abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. His term ended soon after this major constitutional change.

Controversial and Outspoken Figure

Known for his bold and unfiltered opinions, Malik often courted controversy. He accused the Modi government of corruption and raised questions about the handling of the 2019 Pulwama attack during an interview with The Wire. Even in his final years, he remained politically active and vocal, especially among the Jat and farmer communities.
