Telangana Govt Plans to End Retired Employees’ Extended Service – What You Need to Know
A recent directive from the Telangana government has caused uncertainty regarding the termination of retired personnel working in different departments. The memo, issued by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), mandates the dismissal of 177 retired officials, including key figures like Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) MD NVS Reddy and HMWSSB Executive Director M Satyanaryana, by March 31.

Who Is Affected by This Decision?
The order applies to all retired employees working post-retirement, whether appointed through contracts, outsourcing, or other means. It covers departments like GHMC, HMDA, and HMWSSB, along with state-level government agencies.
Outdated List Creates Confusion
One major issue with the memo is that the list of affected employees appears to be outdated. Many officials, especially from GHMC, HMDA, and HMWSSB, had already resigned or were terminated last year. Despite this, their names remain on the list, causing widespread confusion.
Why Is the Government Taking This Step?
The Telangana government believes that extending the tenure of retired employees has increased the financial burden on the state. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s Congress-led administration has reviewed past appointments and found that several officials were granted extensions under the previous BRS government.
No Clear Data on Retired Employees
Currently, authorities lack updated records on the number of retired employees working on a contract or outsourcing basis. Many have already left, and officials are now working on compiling an accurate list.
Can Retired Employees Be Retained?
While the government has decided to end these extended appointments, departments that still require the services of retired personnel can seek fresh approval with proper justification. GHMC authorities have stated that most outsourced staff were terminated last year, but they may request retention for a few key personnel due to their experience.
