Travis Head Likely to Skip BBL as ‘Emotional Drain’ of Ashes Takes Toll

Australia’s in-form batter Travis Head has hinted that he may give the ongoing Big Bash League a miss, choosing recovery and mental freshness over franchise cricket as he prepares for the Ashes finale and the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Australia star Travis Head is unlikely to feature in the remainder of the current Big Bash League season, with his attention firmly on international duties. The left-hander is prioritising the fifth Ashes Test against England and the T20 World Cup scheduled in February, making a BBL return with Adelaide Strikers improbable.

January Break Needed

While several Australian players are set to join their BBL teams after the Sydney Test from January 4, Head suggested he may step away from cricket in January. With a hectic calendar ahead, the batter believes a short break could be crucial for both physical and mental recovery.

Ashes Take Toll

Explaining his decision, Head openly spoke about the emotional demands of an Ashes series. He admitted that the intensity of playing against England over a long Test campaign can be mentally exhausting, making it difficult to immediately switch formats without adequate rest.

World Cup Focus

Head stressed that arriving fresh for a global tournament is non-negotiable. With the T20 World Cup approaching fast, he feels managing workload has become more important than ever, especially after months of constant travel and high-pressure cricket.

Workload Concerns Rise

The Australian batter also flagged concerns over the packed international schedule. He acknowledged that players are spending extended periods on the road, leaving little time to reset mentally before major tournaments.

Red-Hot Test Form

Despite the fatigue, Head has been sensational in the Ashes, topping the batting charts with 437 runs in four Tests. Promoted as opener due to Usman Khawaja’s back issue, he smashed a rapid century in Perth, played a match-defining 170 in Adelaide, and battled tough conditions at the MCG with a gritty second-innings knock.
