US Election: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has highlighted how the recent US presidential election results reveal the American electorate’s dissatisfaction with globalisation's effects. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024 (HTLS2024), Jaishankar analysed the underlying voter sentiments that led to Republican candidate Donald Trump's victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 5 elections.

Jaishankar's Perspective on US Elections and Globalisation

Jaishankar explained that Trump’s victory underscores the growing discontent among voters who feel excluded from the benefits of globalisation.

“If the American political verdict is interpreted, it reflects the electorate's disenchantment and unhappiness with the impact of globalisation on them,” said Jaishankar during his interaction with Hindustan Times editor-in-chief R Sukumar.

The minister noted that under Trump’s leadership, the US would likely focus more on its economic and manufacturing interests, becoming increasingly self-aware of its national priorities.

Interconnection of Technology and National Security

Jaishankar emphasised the inseparable relationship between technology and national security in today’s world.

“Technology and national security cannot be compartmentalised; they are integral to the digital and AI revolution,” he said.

He also added that while the US remains a global superpower, it requires international partnerships to address modern challenges effectively.

China: A Key Player in Globalisation

While discussing globalisation, Jaishankar pointed out that China has been the biggest beneficiary of this model over the last 25 years. He linked the roots of globalisation to the policies of President Bill Clinton's administration, which set the groundwork for the current system.

HTLS 2024: A Celebration of Excellence

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a keynote address, congratulating the publication on its century-long legacy. PM Modi also unveiled a commemorative stamp in honour of Hindustan Times’ remarkable journey.

“All those associated with Hindustan Times’ 100-year journey deserve congratulations and appreciation,” said PM Modi.
