69-year-old Pratap Sarangi, who was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak, is a second-time MP from Balasore Lok Sabha seat in Odisha. Pratap Sarangi was also made a Union Minister in the Modi government 2.0. However, his tenure as a Minister of State lasted only till 2021.
Pratap Sarangi was also in the news due to his simple life and unique style of campaigning. Former Union Minister Pratap Sarangi is also called the Modi of Odisha.
Reached Parliament by campaigning on a bicycle
Pratap Sarangi first came into the limelight when he defeated his billionaire rival in the electoral battle by campaigning on a bicycle. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP fielded Pratap Sarangi from the Balasore seat. Pratap was pitted against Biju Janata Dal (BJD)'s Rabindra Kumar Jena.
BJD candidate Jena had entered the fray as an outgoing MP. Pratap used to campaign against Arabati Rabindra on a bicycle and used to hold autorickshaw rallies. When the election results came, Pratap, who campaigned on a bicycle, outperformed the BJD candidate who campaigned with a convoy of luxury vehicles.

Pratap Sarangi came into the limelight with his first speech in Parliament. Sarangi gave an impressive speech using Hindi, Sanskrit and English. He had referred to verses from the Gita and the Vedas as well as verses from the Ramcharitmanas and said that the Congress should congratulate PM Modi by acknowledging the success of his first term.
