Vande Bharat Sleeper Faces Fresh Delay as Railway Board Flags Furnishing Issues
The Vande Bharat Sleeper, India’s first premium sleeper version of the semi-high-speed train, was expected to launch in October 2025. However, the Railway Board has now flagged several furnishing and safety issues, leading to another delay. The second rake is still undergoing interior work, while officials have granted only in-principle approval for operations.

Board Flags Design Issues
According to reports, the Railway Board pointed out concerns such as sharp edges in the berthing area, poorly designed curtain handles, and “pigeon pockets” between berth connectors, potential trouble spots for cleaning and maintenance. The Board has directed immediate corrective measures and demanded improved designs for upcoming rakes.
Safety and Quality First
Trial observations from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) echoed these concerns. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has since submitted an updated compliance report to address them. The Board stressed that these refinements are essential to ensure both passenger safety and operational efficiency before the train enters service.
Ministry’s Safety Mandates
The Ministry of Railways has also instructed all zones to adhere strictly to safety and operational norms, including:
- Full implementation of fire safety protocols
- Integration of Kavach 4.0, India’s indigenous anti-collision system
- Installation of reliable communication systems linking loco pilots, guards, and station masters
- Proper upkeep of all brake systems
Additionally, loco pilots must be trained to uncouple the semi-permanent coupler within 15 minutes during emergencies, with necessary tools kept ready in their kits.
Ensuring Smooth Operations
Railway zones have been told to deploy adequately trained technical staff to handle mid-journey breakdowns or emergencies. Once operational, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to redefine overnight train travel in India-but officials emphasize that quality and safety will not be compromised for speed.
