Varun Chakravarthy Becomes India’s Second-Oldest Player to Debut in ODIs
Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy made history by becoming the second-oldest Indian player to debut in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The 33-year-old received his maiden ODI cap before the match against England in Cuttack on Sunday. At 33 years and 164 days, Chakravarthy now holds the record just behind Farokh Engineer, who made his ODI debut at 36 years and 138 days.

Strong Start with Early Wicket
Chakravarthy, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, impressed on his debut by dismissing Phil Salt in his opening spell, showing his potential at the international level.
Possible Spot in Champions Trophy Squad?
With the Champions Trophy approaching, Chakravarthy’s ODI performance could impact India’s final squad selection. There is speculation that he might replace one of the four specialist spinners, possibly Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar. His performance in the ongoing ODIs will play a key role in the selectors' decision.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Absence from the Squad
While announcing the updated squad, BCCI did not include Jasprit Bumrah. However, this was expected as Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play the first two ODIs. His availability for the third match depends on clearance from the medical team at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Varun Chakravarthy ’s Recent Performance
Chakravarthy had a fantastic T20I series against England, where he took 14 wickets in five matches and was named ‘Player of the Series’. Surprisingly, he was not initially included in India’s ODI squad or the Champions Trophy lineup, but his recent performances might change that.
What’s Next for Varun Chakravarthy ?
With a promising start in ODIs, Varun Chakravarthy’s role in the Indian team could become crucial. If he continues to perform well, he might secure a permanent spot in the squad for upcoming international tournaments.
