Political Journey Begins

Born on July 29, 1939, in Angamali (Ernakulam district), Thankachan entered politics through the Congress party. He soon became a prominent face in the faction led by K Karunakaran, emerging as one of the most influential members of the party’s ‘I’ group.

Kerala Assembly Stint

Thankachan first contested from Perumbavoor in 1982 and retained the seat in 1987, 1991, and 1996. His most prominent role came as Speaker of the ninth Assembly (1991–95), where he was admired for maintaining decorum in stormy sessions and displaying firmness that won respect across party lines.

Key Roles in Government

Over the years, he held several important posts, including Opposition Chief Whip (1987–91) and Agriculture Minister in A K Antony’s cabinet (1995–96). In 2004, he rose further within the party as Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, highlighting his stature in Congress politics.

Setbacks in Political Career

Despite his long run, politics wasn’t without setbacks. In the 2001 Assembly elections, when the UDF secured a record win with 100 seats, Thankachan unexpectedly lost his Perumbavoor stronghold—a shocking defeat that also cost him a potential cabinet berth.

Remembering the Veteran

Known for his organisational skills, loyalty, and sharp political instincts, Thankachan left an indelible mark on Kerala politics. He is survived by his family, with funeral details to be announced later.
