Why Were No Soldiers at Pahalgam During Terror Attack? Govt Explains
The recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 civilians lost their lives, has raised serious questions. During an all-party meeting, the Opposition asked the central government why there were no soldiers present in Baisaran, the popular tourist spot where the attack happened.

What Was the Government's Response?
The meeting, held on Thursday evening, was led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah. The government explained that the Baisaran area is usually protected during the Amarnath Yatra, which starts in June. Security forces are sent only during that time.
However, this year, local tour operators started taking tourists there from April 20 — much earlier than usual. The government said the local administration was not informed about these early tours, which is why no troops were deployed at that time.
Opposition Leaders Demand Answers
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with Mallikarjun Kharge and AAP's Sanjay Singh, questioned the government on the lack of security. They also asked why the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan was suspended if India does not have enough water storage facilities.
Govt Calls It a Strategic Move
The government replied that suspending the treaty was a strong and symbolic decision to show that India will take firm action. It wasn’t about immediate benefits but about sending a powerful message.
Who Attended the Meeting?
Several top leaders were present at the meeting — JP Nadda (BJP), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), Praful Patel (NCP), Sasmit Patra (BJD), Shrikant Shinde (Shiv Sena), Premchand Gupta (RJD), Tiruchi Siva (DMK), and Ram Gopal Yadav (SP). Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka also gave a detailed presentation on the attack and the current situation.
