What Sustainable Tourism Means

Sustainable tourism is about more than just travel—it’s about conscious choices that protect the planet and empower communities. This includes reducing waste, cutting down carbon footprints, conserving resources, respecting cultures, and boosting local economies while leaving behind a positive impact.

Indians Lead the Way

According to a Booking.com survey, 73% of Indian travellers now place sustainability at the heart of their travel plans, compared to the global average of 42%. This shift marks a growing awareness around eco-friendly tourism, where authentic cultural experiences and responsible travel take centre stage.

How Indians Travel Sustainably

1. Eco-Friendly Stays

Price and location are no longer the only factors. About 34% of Indians now consider a hotel’s sustainability credentials before booking.

2. Reducing Waste & Plastics

Nearly half (48%) carried reusable bottles last year, 42% recycled waste, and 39% avoided single-use plastics on their trips.

3. Respecting Nature

42% travelled outside peak season to reduce crowding, 37% avoided animal-harming activities, and 28% chose less crowded destinations.

4. Supporting Local Communities

42% shopped at small local stores, 40% learned about destination cultures, 33% joined authentic cultural activities, and 31% dined at restaurants serving organic or locally sourced food.

Stronger Commitment in 2025

This year, 42% of Indian travellers plan to engage in eco-conscious activities like wildlife observation and environmental education—far higher than the global average of 19%. These small but impactful actions are steadily shaping a more sustainable tourism landscape.

How the Report Was Conducted

The findings come from a Booking.com study of 32,000 respondents across 34 countries, conducted in January 2025.
