Makar Sankranti, a significant festival in the Indian calendar, involves devotees making offerings to the Hindu deity Surya. It signifies the sun's transition into Makara, marking the end of the winter solstice and the onset of longer days.

Celebrated annually on January 14, the festival goes by various names such as Pongal, Bihu, and Maghi in different regions. Devotees across the country observed rituals at various ghats.

In Gujarat, the festival is known as Uttarayan, signifying the sun's entry into Makara. The state is renowned for its International Kite Flying Festival, where people gather on terraces with colorful kites after morning prayers.

During the kite-flying festivities (Uttarayan), the exclamation "Kai Po Che" is commonly heard among participants. Additionally, people indulge in delicacies like Chikki (made of sesame seeds and peanuts) and Undhiyu (a dish with winter vegetables).

The festival, known for strengthening friendships, revolves around activities like making khichdi, flying kites, and enjoying sesame sweets and coconut laddoos. Makar Sankranti symbolizes the departure of the winter season.
