Eid al-Fitr 2026 Date: Will It Be March 20 Or 21? UAE Astronomers Predict Moon Sighting

Eid al-Fitr 2026 is likely on March 20 in UAE and March 21 in India, subject to crescent moon sighting.

Update: 2026-03-18 05:52 GMT

Eid al-Fitr in 2026 is expected to be observed on March 20 in the United Arab Emirates, based on astronomical predictions, while India is likely to celebrate the festival on March 21, subject to moon sighting confirmations.

According to experts associated with the Emirates Astronomical Society, the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal is expected to be visible on the evening of March 19. This suggests that Eid al-Fitr may fall on Friday, March 20 in the UAE.

Astronomers have indicated that Ramadan is likely to complete 30 days this year. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, said the moon is unlikely to be visible on March 18, reducing the possibility of an earlier Eid.

Earlier, Tamim Al Tamimi, a member of the society, sighted the Ramadan crescent moon in the UAE sky at 6 a.m. on the 28th day of the holy month and documented the observation.

Experts said that due to the moon’s position, visibility on the 29th day of Ramadan may be difficult, making it likely that the month will run for a full 30 days before Eid is declared.

India Likely To Celebrate A Day Later

In India, Eid al-Fitr is expected to be celebrated on March 21, depending on local moon sightings. As per Islamic tradition, the start of Shawwal is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, which can lead to different dates across countries.

Authorities in the UAE will make the final announcement only after confirmation by the official moon-sighting committee. Similar procedures will be followed in India and other countries.

Significance Of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims worldwide. The festival is associated with gratitude, charity, and community bonding.

On the day of Eid, special morning prayers are offered, and people greet each other and share festive meals. The payment of Zakat al-Fitr is considered obligatory before Eid prayers to ensure that those in need can also participate in the celebrations.
