The date for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections is fast approaching. On April 23rd, the polls... Voters across the state are set to cast their ballots. It is expected that female voters will play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the state. Tamil Nadu is a state where the number of female voters exceeds that of male voters.

Political parties are pulling out all the stops to woo these female voters, announcing a slew of welfare schemes and initiatives specifically tailored for them.

Let us take a closer look at what each political party in the state has pledged for the women of Tamil Nadu.

The state's voter list comprises over 28.9 million women, accounting for 51 percent of the total electorate. Their numbers exceed those of men by 1.22 million. According to the Election Commission, the state has a total of 56.7 million voters, comprising 28.9 million women and 27.7 million men.

Over the past five years, the gender gap has widened further. In the 2021 Assembly elections, women constituted 50.7 percent of the electorate, while men accounted for 49.3 percent. At that time, the number of women exceeded that of men by approximately 1.02 million. Although the total number of voters has decreased following the removal of approximately 7.4 million ineligible names from the electoral rolls, women now constitute a larger share in percentage terms, with their representation rising to 51.07 percent.

District-wise Statistics

A district-wise analysis clearly highlights the advantage held by women. In Chennai, which has a total of 2.83 million voters, there are 1.46 million women compared to 1.37 million men. In Tiruvallur—the district with the highest number of voters at 3.16 million—there are 1.61 million female voters against 1.54 million male voters.

In Erode, the number of women exceeds that of men by over 63,000, while in Coimbatore, this disparity is even more pronounced, with 1.40 million women compared to 1.30 million men. Even in smaller districts like the Nilgiris, the number of female voters is higher, with 285,000 women against 261,000 men. A significant disparity is also evident across the southern districts. In Madurai, there are 12.58 lakh women compared to 12.08 lakh men, while in Thanjavur, there are 10.04 lakh female voters against 9.47 lakh male voters.

What have the parties announced?

Recognizing the influence of women in the elections, political parties are targeting them through various welfare schemes. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's party, the DMK, has promised to provide women with ₹2,000 per month—totaling ₹8,000 annually—through the 'Ilatharasi' coupon scheme.

The opposition party, AIADMK, is also keen to secure the women's vote. In addition to subsidies such as free public transport and other household benefits, the party has promised a cash grant of ₹10,000. Furthermore, free refrigerators are to be distributed to rural women beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Actor Vijay's party, the TVK, could also play a significant role in this election. It, too, has promised to provide women with ₹2,500 per month. Additionally, the party has announced free bus travel and subsidies on LPG cylinders.

Women's Safety: Also a Key Issue

Apart from these welfare schemes, women's safety is emerging as a crucial electoral issue. Opposition parties have questioned the government's performance, highlighting the rising number of crimes committed against women. The BJP, in particular, has launched a scathing attack on the Stalin administration regarding this matter. It has accused Chief Minister Stalin of failing to curb the escalating incidents of violence against women across the state.

Summary

The BJP asserted that the DMK government—led by M.K. Stalin and characterized as utterly incompetent, negligent, and insensitive—could aptly be described as the "modern-day Nero." The party drew a parallel: just as Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned, Chief Minister Stalin and the DMK remain preoccupied with creating social media 'reels' while sexual assaults and violence against women continue unabated in Tamil Nadu. It is worth noting that voting for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections is scheduled for April 23. The Tamil Nadu Assembly comprises 234 seats, and the election results are set to be declared on May 4.
