Viral Video: Which Coconut Contains the Most Water? Understand the 'Math' Behind it
When buying coconuts at the market, people often make their decision based on the fruit's size or the sound it makes when shaken; however, this method is not always accurate.
It is a common occurrence: we carefully select and purchase fruits or coconuts from the market, only to find upon reaching home that their taste or quality does not live up to our expectations. Sometimes the fruit turns out to be sour, while at other times, it is underripe. The same often holds true for coconuts, frequently leading to disappointment. We assume that a coconut will be fresh and full of water, but when we finally crack it open, we find it contains very little liquid. The primary reason for this is that we often lack the knowledge required to correctly identify high-quality fruits or coconuts.
Interestingly, however, the vendors who sell these fruits and coconuts often possess a deep understanding of these nuances. Their advice frequently proves to be spot-on. Recently, a video has gone rapidly viral on social media, featuring a young coconut vendor guiding people on how to select the perfect coconut.
Which Coconut Contains the Most Water?
In the video, the young vendor explains—in a very simple and practical manner—the key factors one should consider when purchasing a coconut. He begins by highlighting a common mistake that the majority of people make. According to him, one should avoid buying coconuts that are excessively large or those that make a loud sloshing sound when shaken. People typically assume that a heavy coconut—or one that makes a distinct sound—must be full of water; however, this assumption can often be misleading.
To substantiate his point, he takes three different coconuts from his stock and proceeds to cut them open for demonstration. First, he cuts into a large-sized coconut. Outwardly, the coconut appears robust and of good quality; yet, when it is finally opened, it yields a surprisingly meager amount of water. The young man explains that coconuts of this type are often of poor quality on the inside; therefore, one should avoid purchasing them.
Next, he picks up a second coconut—one that features three distinct ridges. It, too, appears perfectly fine on the outside; however, when he cuts it open, absolutely no water drains out. This clearly demonstrates that selecting a coconut based solely on its external appearance is not a reliable approach.
He then presents a third coconut, which looks somewhat dry and less appealing on the outside. Typically, people tend to overlook such coconuts, assuming they are old or spoiled. However, the young man reveals a fascinating fact about them: he explains that such coconuts are often brimming with water on the inside. When a coconut contains an abundance of water, its outer shell tends to take on a slightly dry appearance.
When he cuts open this third coconut, a substantial amount of water indeed pours out. The onlookers present are astonished by this sight. In this simple yet effective manner, he demonstrates to the public that when purchasing a coconut, one should not rely solely on its size or the sound it makes when tapped, but must also take into account its external texture and one's own experience.
