On October 23, Bishan Singh Bedi passed away. He was a former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the most known spinners to have played for his country. His age was 77.

In an official statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its sympathies and confirmed Bedi's demise.

The BCCI expresses its sorrow at the passing of famous spinner and former India Test Captain Bishan Singh Bedi. His family and supporters are in our thoughts and prayers during these trying times. The nation's central cricket organization prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

Bedi, an Amritsar native, began playing cricket at a young age and later played first-class cricket for Delhi. He had a total of 1,560 wickets in 370 games, ranking him among the greatest wicket-takers in first-class cricket.

The Delhi squad had also won the prestigious Ranji Trophy championships in 1978–1979 and 1979–1980 under Bedi's leadership.

Anurag Thakur, Union Sports Minister, expressed condolences for his passing and noted that the entire cricket community had suffered.  He stated that Bishan Singh Bedi ji, a former captain of the Indian team and a bowler who has received praise from all around the world, is not present.

Amit Shah, the union home minister, too paid tribute, expressing his "deep sadness" at the former cricketer's death.

“Bedi Ji will live in our memories not only through his contribution to the cricketing world but also as the master of crafty bowling who could weave magic on the pitch. My heartfelt condolences to his family members and his fans in this hour of grief," Amit shah tweeted

Between 1967 and 1979, the renowned Indian spinner participated in 67 Test matches and claimed 266 wickets. He was India's top wicket-taker in Test cricket at that point of his retirement.

Additionally, Bedi had played in 10 One-Day International (ODI) games and had taken seven wickets in those games. When he finished with the miraculous numbers of 12-8-6-1 against East Africa during the 1975 World Cup, he was credited with being crucial to the team's maiden ODI victory.
