BJP stages protest in Bengaluru on Cauvery water issue
In a recent development, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a protest in Bengaluru against the Karnataka state government, raising concerns regarding the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. During the demonstration, protesters strongly criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, alleging that they were aligning with Tamil Nadu's interests and the political party DMK.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa also made a notable statement by staging a sit-in protest near the Gandhi statue in Bengaluru, expressing his dissatisfaction with how the state government was managing the Cauvery water-sharing issue.
In addressing the matter, BS Yediyurappa said our Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar must recognize that they should not represent Tamil Nadu's interests. They must acknowledge the stark reality. Our reservoirs are dangerously low, and the available water is inadequate even for essential needs like drinking water. It is important to note that the Prime Minister cannot intervene in this matter, as it currently falls under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, beyond his purview.
Furthermore, Yediyurappa asserted that the actions of CM Siddaramaiah and Irrigation Minister DK Shivakumar were contributing to the water crisis in Karnataka, suggesting that they were advocating for Tamil Nadu.
Tejasvi Surya, a BJP Member of Parliament representing Bangalore South, called for an immediate halt to the release of water to Tamil Nadu. He criticized the Karnataka government for failing to provide accurate information to the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) and emphasized that shifting blame to the central government would not resolve the issue. He said Central officials have fulfilled their responsibilities, and now the matter rests with the authorities and the Supreme Court.
BJP MLA BY Vijayendra Yediyurappa expressed dissatisfaction with the Congress government's handling of the Cauvery issue, alleging that the state government had neglected its responsibilities. He dismissed the idea of Prime Minister intervention, asserting that it was a failure of the current government.
In response to the BJP protests, State Home Minister G Parameshwara expressed confidence in the state government's ability to address the issue, saying that as a government, they have specific responsibilities. They can engage in their political activities regarding the Cauvery issue. The government is committed to ensuring the welfare of our farmers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the state's intention to challenge the order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority in the Supreme Court. He explained that the Cauvery Regulatory Committee (CWRC) has directed the release of 3000 cusecs of water from Biligundlu, commencing from September 28 until October 15, 2023. Previously, the mandated release was 5000 cusecs. We have consulted our legal experts, and they have advised us to contest this order in the Supreme Court. It is crucial to emphasize that we simply do not have sufficient water to allocate to Tamil Nadu.
