Cabinet Approves 12 Industrial Smart Cities: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that on Wednesday, August 28, the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the development of 12 new industrial smart cities across India. The government plans to invest Rs. 28,602 crore into this initiative, as reported by news agency ANI.

Details of the New Cities

The 12 smart cities will be part of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NIDCP), which spans 10 states and covers six major industrial corridors. The locations for these new industrial areas include:

  • Khurpia in Uttarakhand
  • Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab
  • Dighi in Maharashtra
  • Palakkad in Kerala
  • Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh
  • Gaya in Bihar
  • Zaheerabad in Telangana
  • Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh
  • Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan

Economic Impact

These new industrial cities are expected to have a significant economic impact. The potential investment from these areas is estimated at Rs. 1.5 lakh crore. The development is anticipated to create around 10 lakh direct jobs and 30 lakh indirect jobs.

Strategic Significance

The Director General of the Press Information Bureau highlighted on social media platform X that India will soon have a "grand necklace of Industrial Smart Cities" linked by the Golden Quadrilateral. This approval marks a key step in India's ambition to become a major global manufacturing hub.

Future Outlook

The new industrial smart cities are expected to enhance India’s industrial capabilities and drive economic growth. They align with India’s vision of a developed nation, Viksit Bharat, which aims to offer well-prepared land for investors and integrate sustainable infrastructure with efficient connectivity.
