Chhath Puja 2023: Dive into the Four-Day Festive Extravaganza Today
Each year, the Chhath festival is observed with utmost devotion on the sixth day of the bright half of the Kartik month. A tradition is followed during this festival, where Shashthi Mata and the Sun God are worshipped, earning it the name 'Surya Shashthi'. Spanning four days, the Chhath Puja commences today, on the 17th of November. On the inaugural day of Chhath, auspicious Amrit Yoga and Ravi Yoga align.

Here's the detailed program for the entire Chhath festival.
On Day 1 of the Chhath Puja festival, the ritual of Nahay Khay marks the commencement. This year, it falls on the 17th of November. The day starts with the sunrise at 6:45 a.m. and concludes with the sunset at 5:27 p.m. The key focus is on maintaining cleanliness in the home for the upcoming four days. To adhere to tradition, garlic and onions are avoided. All family members, including those observing fasting during this period, partake in a meal featuring pumpkin vegetables, gram dal, radish, and rice.
On Day 2, i.e., the 18th of November, known as Kharna, the sunrise is at 06:46 am and the sunset is at 05:26 pm. Devotees prepare and consume prasad consisting of jaggery and kheer. Following the intake of this prasad, devotees observe a waterless fast for 36 hours. The prasad is crafted using earthen chulha (stove) and carina wood.
On Day 3, falling on the 19th of November, the ritual of Arghya is performed, specifically during the setting sun, known as Sandhya Arghya. The sunset on this day is at 5:26 p.m. This day holds special significance in Chhath Puja. Arghya, a ritual soup, is adorned with fruits, thekua, rice laddu, etc., and placed in a basket. Following this, devotees offer Arghya by standing waist-deep in water, typically in a river or lake.
On Day 4, occurring on the 20th of November, the Arghya will be presented to the ascending sun. This offering will follow approximately 36 hours after the previous one. Sunrise on this day is expected at 6:47 a.m.
Importance of Chhath
During the Chhath festival, dedicated to Chhath Maiya, fasting individuals offer prayers to the Sun God for the well-being and tranquility of their children and family. Parana, marking the end of the festival, takes place after mid-morning. It's fair to say that Chhath, the significant festival of Sun worship, stands out as the most challenging festival for the purification of both body and mind.
Astrologically, this year holds a special significance for Chhath Puja. Sunday, considered the day of Lord Surya, aligns with the first Arghya, making it exceptionally auspicious. Additionally, on this day, the sun will enter Scorpio, adding another layer of significance to the celebration.
