Pakistan will not hold general elections next year. The mystery  and confusion surrounding fresh elections dates in Pakistan is finally resolved.  The election commission of Pakistan on Thursday announced that Pakistan will have general elections in the last week of the January next year.

Pakistan is currently governed by an interim government headed by a caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar. Anwaar  became the PM of Pakistan when the national assembly was dissolved 3 days prior to its official date of terminal. According to the Article 224 of Pakistan's constitution, fresh elections have to be held within 90 days after dissolution of the assembly. These 90 Days would be completed on November 9.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi wanted election to be held within these 90 Days to follow the constitution and therefore suggested the Election Commission to do so. But the election Commission did not follow his suggestion because the recent amendment of the  Elections Act 2017 empowers election commission to take the decision of conducting elections with full autonomy without having to consult anyone.

President Alvi suggested ECP for elections before Nov 6

Pakistan also had census recently which was the main reason behind Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) delaying Election. According to  Section 17(2) of the Elections Act, the election commission must undertake the task of delimitation of constituencies after every census report being published. According to the election commission, it  needs time to complete the process of delimitation of constituencies.

ECP also scheduled a meeting next month with political parties to discuss and finalise the Code of Conduct for the election. The ECP has also shared a draft of the code of conducts to get feedback from the political parties before finalising it.

Pakistan has been going through a tumultuous time with political and economic instability. Inflation rates touching sky and development taking a backseat.
