As a low-pressure area looms over the South Andaman Sea, the Odisha government has issued a high alert for seven coastal districts in the state. Officials reveal that the weather system is anticipated to escalate into a depression and potentially evolve into a cyclone by December 2.

In a communication addressed to the collectors of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts, Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahoo emphasized the likelihood of the low-pressure area transforming into a cyclonic storm.

To ensure the safety of the coastal communities, Sahoo's letter urges fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea starting from the morning of December 1. Additionally, those currently at sea are advised to return by that date, with the Fisheries and Animal Resources Department also receiving the advisory.

HR Biswas, the Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, stated that the exact trajectory of the system will become clearer once the low-pressure area progresses into a depression. Anticipating the weather impact, light to moderate rains and thundershowers are expected in certain areas, including Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur, on December 3.

Sahoo's letter highlights the potential wind speeds of 40-50 kmph over the central Bay of Bengal from December 1, which may escalate to 50-60 kmph on December 2. In light of the projected very rough sea conditions, fishermen are strongly advised against venturing out from December 1.

"The Fisheries and Animal Resources Department will ensure communication of warning/alert messages to fishermen and boats plying in the sea, along with regularly updating details of boats and fishermen returning," Sahoo assured, underlining the government's commitment to safeguarding the coastal population.
