Defamation Lawsuit of ₹10 Crore Filed by Assam CM's Wife Against Congress MP

Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has initiated a defamation lawsuit amounting to ₹10 crore against Congress Member of Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi. The legal action follows what Riniki's counsel, Devajit Saikia, contends are "false" allegations made by Gogoi regarding irregularities in a food processing project.

The case was officially filed in the court of the civil judge (senior division) of Kamrup Metropolitan on a Friday. Devajit Saikia confirmed the development and emphasized that the defamation claim is in response to various posts made by Gaurav Gogoi on social media platforms, where he allegedly leveled baseless accusations against Riniki Sarma and tarnished her reputation.

Saikia further clarified, "We have made it very clear that we never made any application to receive subsidy." He expects the case to be listed in court on either Monday or Tuesday.

Gaurav Gogoi had previously asserted that Riniki Sarma, through Pride East Entertainments, had received subsidies from central government schemes for the establishment of a food processing industry in Assam. Riniki addressed the issue on social media, stating, "As announced earlier, I have lodged a civil defamation case against Hon’ble MP Sri Gaurav Gogoi claiming damage of Rs.10 crores for his recent defamatory statement against me and Pride East Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. on allegations about claiming and receiving central government subsidy for setting up a food processing industry in Assam."

Efforts to obtain comments from Gaurav Gogoi regarding the lawsuit remained unanswered at the time of reporting.
