Airbus Helicopters has announced plans to set up a dedicated helicopter production line in India to meet rising civilian and military demand. The company expects the regional market to require more than 1,000 helicopters by 2047, with strong growth projected in both segments.

The project will be executed through a final assembly line in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited. The facility is located in Varagal in Karnataka. It was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. Airbus has invested nearly ₹1,000 crore in the unit.

The plant will produce the light single engine Airbus H125 helicopter. The first rollout from the Karnataka line is expected by early 2027. Airbus aims to position India as a manufacturing hub for South Asia and nearby markets.

For the civilian segment, Airbus estimates demand for at least 500 H125 helicopters over the next 20 years. The company sees growth in offshore operations, emergency medical services, tourism and connectivity in remote areas. Demand from neighbouring countries could push total regional requirements beyond 1,000 units.

The military segment could offer even larger opportunities. Airbus is pitching the H125 to the Indian armed forces. The Army has already operated the helicopter on lease in high altitude areas under the Northern Command. Its performance in mountainous terrain has strengthened its case for wider induction.

Airbus has indicated that if the armed forces place orders, militarised versions of the H125 can be produced in India. This would reduce delivery timelines and support the government’s push for defence indigenisation under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The H125 is known for its high altitude capability, making it suitable for border areas including the Himalayas. It can be deployed for reconnaissance, light utility and training roles.

The venture is also expected to create jobs and strengthen the aerospace supply chain in Karnataka. It marks another step in India’s growing defence and aerospace partnership with France, following earlier collaborations in fighter aircraft and submarines.
