In a remarkable display of swift action, an Indian naval warship, INS Sumitra, thwarted a piracy attempt in the waters off the east coast of Somalia. The operation was initiated in response to a distress call reporting the hijacking of an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel named Iman by a group of armed pirates.

According to Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal, INS Sumitra, engaged in anti-piracy operations along the East Coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, promptly responded to the distress message. The vessel had been boarded by pirates, who had taken the crew hostage.

"In a coordinated effort, INS Sumitra intercepted the hijacked vessel, adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), compelling the pirates to release the 17-member crew along with the fishing boat," Commander Madhwal explained.

Following the successful rescue mission, the naval warship thoroughly sanitized the vessel, ensuring its safety before allowing it to continue its transit. The incident underscores the Indian Navy's commitment to ensuring the safety of all vessels and seafarers in the challenging maritime environment of the Indian Ocean region.

"Mission-deployed Indian naval ships engaged in anti-piracy and maritime security operations exemplify the Indian Navy's unwavering dedication to safeguarding the well-being of vessels and seafarers navigating the seas," emphasized Commander Madhwal. The successful operation reflects the preparedness and effectiveness of the Indian Navy in countering maritime threats in the strategically significant Gulf of Aden.
