Indian Navy launched yet another stealth frigate- INS Mahendragiri
ON Friday 1 September, India Navy got another stealth Frigate. Lunched by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's Wife Dr Sudesh Dhankhar launched the warship ‘Mahendragiri’ today at Mumbai.
Vice President was present as the chief guest of the ceremony.
INS Mahendragiri was the last stealth frigate to be launched from the series of 17A project of Indian Navy.
Earlier in the previous month President Smt Droupadi Murmu launched INS Vindhyagiri on 17 the August from Kolkata.

The Ship is named after mountain peak in the eastern Ghats of Odisha. Mahendragiri is the 7th Ship of this series. The 6 predecessors were INS Nilgiri, Udaygiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, and Dunagiri and INS Vindhyagiri. All these ships are named after mountain/mountain ranges.
The ship was built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL). These ships are a step closer to Atma Nirbhar Bharat where India will be elf- reliant in terms of defence production and does not have to rely on foreign countries for defence procurement. Foreign procurements cost much more than domestically produced.
While addressing the ceremony the Vice President said- With increased capability, comes enhanced responsibility. India has emerged as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific region. Today, we are an important global player to secure & also ensure a peaceful, rules based maritime regime across the oceans.
Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar in his addresses said that when we look at all the names of the 7 ships, together they portray the unmatched geography of our nation. These ships make us a builders navy from a buyers navy. It was a strategic decision to build ships IN house and Indigenously.

India navy has been making continues progress in the sector of building its own ships. it has recently signed MOU with Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Vishakhapatnam. According to this contract HSL will be responsible for providing 5 fleet Support ships to Indian Navy.
