In the aftermath of a tragic ambush-style attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, a rigorous manhunt is in progress for the terrorists responsible. This operation involves elite army units, specialized Jammu and Kashmir Police counterterrorism teams, advanced surveillance equipment, dog squads, jammers, and drones to prevent the terrorists from escaping.

The fallen heroes include Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and DSP Humayun Muzamil Bhat, who lost their lives in a gunfight with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants concealed in the Garol forest. Two soldiers were also injured in this harrowing encounter, underscoring the risks faced by security forces.

Teams have sealed possible escape routes and engaged in what they believe to be a terrorist hideout, possibly a cave-like structure. The joint operation was initiated based on intelligence regarding terrorist movements and their suspected hideout. While the possibility of being lured into the area hasn't been ruled out, officials are assessing all aspects.

The situation has reached a critical point, and it's anticipated that the security forces may require another day to conclude the operation. As of now, there have been no official statements from either the army or the police divulging specific details of the ongoing mission.

This incident follows an earlier encounter in Kulgam's Halan forest in which three soldiers lost their lives. Only 12 to 15 terrorists, some foreign, are currently active in Anantnag and Kulgam.

Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Ashish Dhonchak, both from the Sikh Light Infantry, received the Sena Medal for their valor in counterterrorism operations. Their tragic loss underscores the vital role of young commanding officers leading specialist counterterrorism units.

This encounter is a grim reminder of the inherent risks faced by soldiers and commanders in counterterror operations, despite a recent decrease in incidents. Until July 31 of this year, Jammu and Kashmir recorded only 30 "terrorist-initiated incidents," down from previous years, along with fewer encounters. However, sporadic incidents like these highlight ongoing security challenges.
