This day is celebrated as Indian Navy Day because on this day in 1971, the Indian Navy successfully attacked Pakistan's Navy, annihilating many ships near the Karachi Naval Base during Indo-Pakistan war. Operation Trident was launched by the Indian Navy, targeting Pakistan's cargo, destroyer, and minesweeper, destroying all three, one after the other. The Indian Navy strategically targeted Pakistan's Navy at night because Pakistan's aircraft did not possess the capabilities for night bombing.
This operation was one of the most successful naval operations in the world after World War II, and thus, nations began celebrating this day of victory as Indian Navy Day
