Statue of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw unveiled at grand entrance of Parade Ground Bangalore
In a momentous ceremony on Monday, a grand entrance gate and a statue honoring Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw were unveiled at the parade ground in Bengaluru. Lieutenant General K S Brar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Dakshin Bharat Area, took the lead in revealing the impressive structures named after the revered Field Marshal.
Highlighting the importance of preserving history, the GOC emphasized Field Marshal Manekshaw's remarkable achievements. The parade ground, named after him, plays a central role in hosting events of national significance, according to a release from the Defence PRO office.
During the British era, the parade ground stretched from Cubbon Park to its current location, known then as the "Sports Ground and Garrison Parade Ground." Over time, due to urbanization needs, the area was reduced to its present size.
This parade ground annually hosts the Republic Day and Independence Day parades, supervised by the Governor and Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Major General Ravi Murugan, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, led the project, completing it in just over eight weeks. The grand gate, measuring 66 feet in width and 20 feet in height, boasts a meticulously planned layout that seamlessly combines military precision with artistic finesse.
At the heart of the grand gate stands a 7-foot iron statue of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, flanked by the insignia of Southern Command and Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area. The statue, crafted with meticulous detail, captures the essence of Manekshaw's resolute leadership, serving as a poignant reminder of his invaluable contributions to the nation.
The gate's architecture is not only disciplined, reflecting the Indian Army's ethos, but also blends tradition with modern design. An Indian Army crest at the apex of the gate showcases the values, ethos, and spirit of the army, typically featuring the national emblem and crossed swords.
Plans are in motion to engage the community through military displays, educational programs, guided tours, and interactive displays. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of the Indian Army and the historical context surrounding the parade ground, the release stated.
