Delhi-NCR residents struggle amidst record-breaking pollution
Following a brief respite from rain ahead of Diwali, Delhi-NCR is grappling with a rapid surge in air pollution. The one-day rainfall on November 10 provided temporary relief, but the post-Diwali pollution has once again jeopardized air quality. In addition to Delhi, many areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) are now experiencing 'very poor' air quality.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an air quality index (AQI) exceeding 500 on Thursday morning. Specific AQI levels include 480 in Anand Vihar, 418 in RK Puram, 430 in Punjabi Bagh, and 408 in ITO. The Meteorological Department predicts the onset of fog in Delhi-NCR in the coming days, exacerbating the pollution woes.
Air quality in Delhi again reaches severe category after six days
The respite from pollution levels, which temporarily decreased due to pre-Diwali rain in the National Capital Region (NCR), has come to an end. Post-Diwali, pollution has been on a steady rise. The combination of smog, light fog, and increased cold, coupled with higher humidity in the atmosphere, contributed to a surge in pollution levels. On Wednesday, after six days, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi surpassed 400 once again, placing it in the severe category. Additionally, most major cities in the NCR continue to experience very poor air quality.
No relief for next three days
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), there is little relief expected from pollution in the next three days, and the air quality in Delhi may continue to stay in the very poor category. The air index in Delhi, as per the CPCB report, is at 401, falling into the very severe category. Among the 37 pollution monitoring centers in Delhi, the air index exceeded 400 at 17 locations.
Most polluted areas
Nehru Nagar, Jahangirpuri, Punjabi Bagh, Bawana, and RK Puram emerged as the most polluted areas, with Nehru Nagar's air index reaching 450, nearing the hazardous category. Faridabad recorded an air index of 390, Ghaziabad at 378, Greater Noida at 338, and Noida at 360, resulting in very poor air quality in these NCR cities. Gurugram had the lowest pollution in NCR, with an air index of 297, classified as poor.
