Delhi Police Seize Over 1,300 Kilograms of Illegal Firecrackers
On Sunday, the Delhi Police arrested three individuals involved in the illegal supply of firecrackers. A significant quantity of over 1,300 kilograms of banned firecrackers was seized during the operation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Kumar confirmed that 1,323 kilograms of illicit firecrackers were confiscated from two godowns. The police arrested the owner of these godowns and the driver responsible for delivering the firecrackers.
The Raid
The police conducted a raid in Baprola village, located in outer Delhi, on Friday after receiving a tip-off about illegal firecracker activities. The operation uncovered a large stockpile of banned firecrackers, leading to the arrests.
Identifying the Suspects
The individuals arrested were identified as Manoj Kumar, Sanjay Atri, and Vipin Kumar. According to police reports, Manoj Kumar had been involved in selling banned firecrackers since the COVID-19 lockdown. Driver Sanjay Atri was responsible for the supply of these firecrackers. Both were initially arrested and questioned, during which they disclosed that they had been supplying firecrackers to areas like Prem Nagar and Kirari in Delhi.
Further Investigation
During the investigation, both suspects provided information about another godown, which led to the arrest of Vipin Kumar. The police are continuing their inquiry into the illegal firecracker network.
Legal Action
The Delhi Police have filed a case against the three individuals under sections 288 BNS and 9B of the Explosive Act of 1884. In a related incident earlier in September, a man was arrested for smuggling 65 kilograms of illegal fireworks into Delhi just before Diwali.
Government Ban
The Delhi government has enforced a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers due to rising air pollution and deteriorating air quality during the winter months. This ban will remain in place until January 1, 2025.
Gurugram Authorities' Prevention Measures
Alongside the efforts of the Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has established teams to curb the illegal supply, storage, and sale of prohibited firecrackers as part of their initiative to tackle pollution in the area.
