Devastating Drownings During Bihar's Jivitputrika Festival Claim 43 Lives
On Thursday, the Bihar government reported that at least 43 people, including 37 children, drowned during the 'Jivitputrika' festival. Three others are still missing following incidents in rivers and ponds across the state.
Locations Affected
The drowning incidents occurred in 15 districts, including East and West Champaran, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Buxar, Siwan, Rohtas, Saran, Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Gopalganj, and Arwal.
Festival Significance
The 'Jivitputrika' festival involves women fasting for the well-being of their children and taking holy dips in water bodies.
Government Response
The Disaster Management Department (DMD) confirmed that 43 bodies have been recovered so far, and search operations are ongoing. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs. 4 lakh to the families of the deceased. The process of distributing this compensation has started, with eight families already receiving it.
Specific Incidents in Aurangabad
In Aurangabad district, eight minors, including seven girls, drowned in two separate ponds while bathing during the festival. These incidents occurred in Kushaha and Itahat villages.
District Magistrate Srikant Shastri explained that the drownings happened when families went to the ponds for holy baths. Rescue efforts were swift, but unfortunately, the victims were declared dead upon arrival at local hospitals.
