Diwali 2023: Green crackers are popular this year. What are green fire crackers and how do you recognize them?
Diwali, the festival of lights, is approaching, and shoppers can be seen in the markets. Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day festival of lights, is considered a good day to buy and bring in new metal items, particularly gold and silver.
Various rituals are performed during the five-day festival, and in addition to Goddess Lakshmi, several other Gods and Goddesses are worshiped. The new moon day, known as Amavasya, is the most important of the five days of Diwali celebrations and is known as Lakshmi Puja, Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja, and Diwali Puja.
Diwali celebrations include decorating homes with lights and diyas; they also involve creating rangolis, getting new clothes, doing puja, and lighting crackers and fireworks.
Although setting off crackers can be entertaining, it's crucial to take the climate into account given the rising environmental concerns and the detrimental effects of traditional crackers on pollution.
In an effort to lessen noise and air pollution, numerous places are now encouraging eco-friendly and peaceful Diwali celebrations. Green and environmentally friendly crackers are an option if you still want to burn them.
What are Green Crackers?
"Green crackers" are defined by the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR NEERI) as firecrackers with a smaller shell, no ash production, and/or additional components like dust suppressants to reduce emissions, especially particulate matter.
These crackers lack the barium compounds that give them their distinctive green color. Barium is one metal oxide that pollutes the air and generates noise. When burning green crackers, the amount of dust released is reduced by the water vapor released.
Green firecrackers are approximately thirty percent less loud than conventional firecrackers, which have sounds between 110 and 125 decibels. Conventional firecrackers have sounds around 160 decibels.

Green crackers were introduced in India in 2019 and are currently available in three varieties: SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminum), STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker), and SWAS (Safe Water Releaser). Customers can check the fireworks packaging for the CSIR NEERI logo to identify green crackers.
