India gets its first 3D Printed Post Office- completed in 43 Days

Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually inaugurated India's first 3D printed post office on Friday. The post office, built at Cambridge Layout in Bengaluru, was completed in just 43 days, two days ahead of the deadline.

The post office was built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) with technical assistance from IIT Madras.

“Bengaluru always presents a new picture of India. The new picture that you saw today in terms of this 3D-printed post office building, that’s the spirit of India today. That’s the spirit with which our country is progressing today,” the Union minister Vaishnaw said.

The news was applauded by PM Modi, who said that every Indian would be proud of India's first 3D printed post office in Bengaluru. He even applauded the efforts of those who worked on the project, sharing his appreciation in a tweet.

What is 3D printing technology?

3D printing technology consists of machinery that builds a structure by laying concrete layers one on top of the other. This technology helps in building complex structures with ease. This technology saves time, efforts as well as materials.

The post office is built at a cost of Rs 23 lakh, which is approximately 30% less than what it would cost using conventional methods. The post office is built on a total area of 1021 sq ft.

The process of 3D printing starts with design, where a digital 3D model of the design is built using computer-aided design (CAD) software or obtained from 3D scanning techniques. The next step is slicing, where the entire 3D model is sliced into horizontal cross-sections using slicing software. Each of these layers is converted into instructions that the 3D printer can understand. Then the actual printing starts, where it deposits a concrete mixture layer by layer.

This building technology produces less waste and can be used to create complex structures.

This technology was imported from Denmark for the project.
