Nation produced 779.1 billion units (BU) of energy generated by coal, an 8.38% increase

According to a formal announcement released on Saturday, the country's generation of electricity derived from coal rose 8.38% to 779.1 billion units (BU) between April and November of FY24.

The amount of coal-based power generated domestically in the same period last year was 718.83 BU. The coal ministry released a statement stating that during the time under review, India's power generation climbed by 7.71%.

The period saw an 11.19% year-over-year increase in the total amount of coal-based power generation due to an exceptional spike in temperature, a delayed monsoon in the country's northern region, and the start of full commercial operations following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The amount of coal imported for blending fell significantly, from 27.21 million tonnes (MT) in the previous fiscal year to 15.16 million MT up to November of this year. This decline occurred despite the rising demand for electricity.

According to the government, this demonstrates the country's determination to eliminate overall coal imports and produce coal independently.

The government continues to push for increased coal output to protect foreign reserves by making coal more readily available and reducing reliance on imports.
