Pakistan seeks membership in BRICS group and intends to join in 2024: What prevents Pakistan from Joining?
Pakistan expects Russia to assist it during the application process for membership in the BRICS group of countries, which it has submitted in 2024.
Muhammad Khalid Jamali, Pakistan's recently appointed ambassador to Russia, stated in an interview with TASS that his country would like to be a member of this significant organization and that they are in the process of reaching out to other members to express support for Pakistan's membership in general and the Russian Federation in particular.
Regarding Pakistan's application for membership in the BRICS, the diplomat confirmed that the nation has indeed made the submission. He went on to say that Islamabad plans to join the group in 2024, when Russia will be the host nation.
BRICS, an alliance of developed and developing countries, was first formed in 2010 with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as its members.
According to TASS, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated at the beginning of October that the BRICS intends to complete a list of applicants for partner-state status prior to the next summit, which is set for Kazan in 2024.
At its most recent summit, which took place in October in South Africa, the BRICS decided to invite six more nations to join their alliance. Invitations to join the BRICS have been extended to Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Their official membership is scheduled to start on January 1, 2024.
According to the report, the official stated that in an attempt to expand the "circle of BRICS friends," there will be a special emphasis on widening the group's relationships, particularly in Latin America, under Russia's leadership in BRICS.
Following Russia's 2020 chairmanship of the BRICS, India took over in January 2021 and stayed in that position until December 2021. The core idea and approach of India's BRICS Chairship, "BRICS@15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus," was captured in this motto.
Pakistan has the world's largest Chinese-funded energy portfolio
A recent study published by Nikkei Asia indicates that, despite the economic crisis, China has loaned Pakistan about USD 21 billion more than first anticipated during the past 20 years. According to the report, Pakistan has the world's largest Chinese-funded energy portfolio.
The Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N government, which was in power from 2013 to 2017, amassed USD 36 billion of the total finance of USD 67.2 billion. According to a Nikkei Asia report, Sharif recently returned from years of self-imposed exile in London to assist the party in its election campaign, presumably with the tacit support of Pakistan's military.
More countries should be allowed to join the BRICS family in order to integrate knowledge and efforts towards making global governance equitable and fairer, according to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
What prevents Pakistan from Joining?
There is concern within the BRICS that efforts to include Pakistan could damage the organization's reputation and lead to India renouncing its willing membership.
One of the largest and fastest-growing economies, consumer markets, and hubs for advanced manufacturing in the world may not be able to come together if India decides not to actively participate in the group.
The inclusion of Pakistan will greatly reduce the significance of BRICS since the grouping will be burdened with a liability that it cannot shed, thus deterring other worthy nations from joining.
