In response to the US action, India had levied these taxes on 28 US products in 2019.

The abolition of tariffs on some products, including apples, walnuts in shell, fresh or dried almonds, and lentils (masur), was announced by the finance ministry in a recent notification.

Prior to US President Joe Biden's visit to India to attend the G20 Summit on September 9–10, which will be preceded by a private meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, this action is being done.

Both nations decided to end six WTO (World Trade Organisation) disputes and eliminate the retaliatory tariffs on specific US items during the prime minister's state visit to the US in June.

In accordance with the agreement, India will eliminate additional taxes on chickpeas (10%), lentils (20%), fresh or dried almonds (Rs 7 per kg), shelled almonds (Rs 20 per kg), walnuts (20%), and apples (20%).

Anupriya Patel, a minister of state for commerce and industry, stated in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha in July that the government had decided to remove retaliatory customs duties on the import of apples, chickpeas, lentils, fresh or dried almonds in their shells, walnuts, and boric acid.

She had stated that India did not suffer a loss as a result of the elimination of retaliatory tariffs or reductions in import duties with the US.
