Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: Stock Market Closed Today, Trading to Resume Tomorrow
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: Investors will have to pause their trading activities today as the Indian stock market observes a holiday for Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are closed on Wednesday, November 5. Regular trading will resume tomorrow, Thursday, November 6.
This mid-week break marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and one of the most revered spiritual leaders in India.

Market Performance on Tuesday
Before the holiday, Indian indices witnessed a weak trading session on Tuesday. The Sensex dropped over 500 points, while the Nifty 50 slipped by 170 points, largely due to continued selling pressure from foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The decline reflected investor caution ahead of crucial global economic data releases.
All Trading Segments Closed
The closure today affects all segments, including equity, derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGRs).
According to the 2025 market holiday list, this is the second and last stock market holiday in November. With this closure, the trading week for Dalal Street is shortened to four days, with operations resuming on Thursday, November 6.
Commodity Market Suspension
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has also suspended both its morning and evening sessions for Guru Nanak Jayanti. This means that trading in gold, silver, crude oil, and other commodities will remain halted throughout the day.
Normal operations in commodity trading will resume tomorrow along with the equity markets.
Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. The festival is celebrated with prayers, Akhand Path (continuous recitation of Guru Granth Sahib), Nagar Kirtans (religious processions), and Langars (community meals).
The occasion stands as a reminder of Guru Nanak’s teachings — equality, humility, compassion, and selfless service — which continue to inspire millions around the world.
Remaining Market Holidays in 2025
As per the official holiday calendar, Indian stock markets will have a total of 14 holidays in 2025. After today’s closure, only one trading holiday remains for the year — December 25 (Christmas).
Apart from these, both NSE and BSE remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays as part of the regular weekend schedule.
When trading resumes on Thursday, market focus will shift to corporate earnings, global economic indicators, and foreign fund flows. Analysts suggest domestic investors should keep an eye on global cues and commodity price trends, particularly in oil and gold, which have been volatile in recent sessions.
