NHAI is redefining highway safety while protecting wildlife and forest ecology
A special animal overpass is being constructed on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway through the Mahimandalam Reserve Forest, allowing vehicles to pass underneath while wild animals can safely cross.
In this era of rapidly expanding infrastructure, where a network of roads and expressways is being laid, unique initiatives are also being seen to strike a balance between development and the environment. A special animal overpass being built on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway is an example of this. This overpass will allow vehicles to pass underneath while wild animals can safely cross the road. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that a special bridge will be built within the Mahimandalam Reserve Forest to allow wild animals to cross safely and without obstruction.
What is a wildlife overpass?
A wildlife overpass is a special bridge built over a busy highway to allow wild animals to cross the road without any danger. This reduces human-wildlife conflict and the risk of road accidents. The Mahimandalam Reserve Forest, located between Vellore and Ranipet, is home to many important wildlife species, including the Indian gaur, panther, wild boar, and deer. Therefore, the construction of this overpass is considered a crucial step.
Overpass will be 90 meters long and 25 meters wide
According to the NHAI, this overpass will be 90 meters long, 25 meters wide, and approximately 5.5 meters above the road. It has been designed to provide animals with a natural-like experience and allow them to use it without fear. This initiative will not only ensure the safety of wildlife but also provide a safe and smooth journey for travelers on the highway.
Artificial grassland will also be developed
To give the overpass a natural appearance, an artificial grassland is being developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. This grassland will act as a natural camouflage, allowing the structure to blend into the surrounding forest and making the animals feel comfortable.
The approximately 258-km long four-lane Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway is one of the major infrastructure projects in the country.
