Geopolitical Stress Pulls Down Sensex by 800 Points, But Fundamentals Remain Strong

Sensex Down: The Indian stock market opened with losses today due to increasing tensions with Pakistan after India’s counter-terror operation, “Operation Sindoor.” The Sensex had fallen over 1,300 points during pre-market trade but recovered slightly to open 500 points lower. By 10:15 am, Sensex was down over 800 points at 79,462, and Nifty stood at 23,987 — a drop of more than 200 points.

Why Markets Reacted Sharply

The drop came after Pakistan tried to strike Indian military bases and cities with missiles and drones last night. However, Indian defense systems successfully neutralized all threats with no reported damage or casualties.

Key Gainers and Losers

Among Sensex’s 30 listed companies, Titan, Larsen & Toubro, BEL, and Tata Motors saw gains. On the other hand, Power Grid, ICICI Bank, Ultratech Cement, and Eicher Motors were the top losers.

Expert Opinion: Why Losses Were Limited

Despite the geopolitical crisis, experts believe the Indian market didn’t crash because of two strong factors — India’s clear military advantage and a resilient market supported by global trends.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial, said that India’s strong position in conventional warfare and weakening foreign currencies like the US dollar are helping Indian markets stay afloat.

Foreign Investment Continues

Foreign investors pumped in over Rs.2,000 crore into Indian markets yesterday, showing continued confidence even during tense times.

What Triggered the Tension?

India’s anti-terror mission, "Operation Sindoor," targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. In response, Pakistan launched air strikes at Indian bases in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur — all of which were intercepted successfully by Indian forces.

Pakistan also opened fire across multiple locations on the Line of Control (LoC), targeting both army posts and civilian zones.

Global Image of Pakistan Under Scrutiny

Pakistan’s global image has taken a hit after video evidence from Op Sindoor exposed active terror hubs in its territory. Its request for a “neutral probe” has also been viewed as an attempt to deflect attention from its own role in harboring terrorists.
